Invitation to Spring School of Publishing,
27–28 April 2024

Multipöly calls together / sets in motion the Spring School of Publishing, humming / scrolling / reaching. This is a meeting place for practitioners in the fields of text and art, design, activism, research etc. interested in self-organised publishing.

The theme of the Spring School 2024 is Publishing and movement:

How are publications connected to moving bodies?
What kind of movement is there in reading?
What kind of movement is there in publishing?
How to trace movement inside a publication?
How to publish the presence or movement of bodies?
How does bodily movement relate to publishing or distributing?
What are the unknown ways, means and gestures of distributing publications?
What kind of movement(s) do publications generate? 

The Spring School of Publishing will take place at Virgiinia in Alppila, Helsinki, on the weekend of 27–28 April. When enrolling, participants are asked to share a question that is important to them and relates to the theme of publishing and movement. The school will be structured around these questions.

​The guests of the Spring School of Publishing are artist, choreographer Maija Hirvanen and artist Hikari Nishida.

The Spring and Autumn Schools on Publishing organised by Multipöly open up perspectives on publishing as a self-organised activity through a specific theme, by way of discussions / proposals / making / moving / spending time together. Despite their title, the schools are informal and low in hierarchy: there are no teachers, but shared wonder and knowledge production are achieved together.

The Spring and Autumn Schools of Multipöly serve as a starting point for experimental publications, “Papers”, which will be published afterwards. The aim of the Papers is to document and expand the knowledge / experience / space that has been developed together and to share it with a wider audience. 

Multipöly is an experimental publishing collective founded by graphic designer Arja Karhumaa and artist Maarit Bau Mustonen. We explore publishing as a concept, a site and a practice. Our studio Multipöly Room is located in Vallila, Helsinki, where we organise the monthly Browsing Room event and edit the Eurantie Window Publication, among other things.

Free of charge. We will prepare vegan food together: breakfast, light lunch and snack.

You can enroll here 1–25 March.

The Spring School can accommodate around 15 participants. In case of a higher number of enrollments, the participants will be selected by lottery.
